New Cancer Center Breaks Ground
(2008-01-10)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: The new facility for the San Juan Regional Cancer Center broke ground yesterday.

KSUT's Sarah Baumgartner reports.

NAVAJO BLESSING

SARAH: Navajo Medicine man Joe Harrison blessed the ground of what is going to be the new 10.7 million dollar cancer center in Farmington.
With cancer treatments and research advancing each day, the 15,500 sq. ft. San Juan Regional Cancer center, will focus on bringing all cancer-related programs together.
Ruth Brooks, manager of Radiology at San Juan Regional says why there is a need for a new facility.
RUTH BROOKS: RIGHT NOW WE ARE REALLY SHORT ON SPACE. AND WE SHARE A SPACE WITH MEDICAL ONCOLOGY AND WE JUST HAVE NO ROOM TO ACTUALLY GROW OUR PROGRAMS ANY MORE. WE WANT TO LOOK AT DOING SOME COMPLIMENTARY ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE TYPE OF OFFERINGS AND THOSE KINDS OF THINGS. AND WE JUST DON'T HAVE THE SPACE TO DO IT. AND WE'D LIKE TO BRING EVERYTHING THAT WE'RE OFFERING UNDER ONE ROOF SO PATIENTS GET USED TO GOING ONE PLACE AND GETTING REALLY FAMILIAR WITH IT.
The types of treatment patients will receive are preventive care, treatment, after-care and support services. There will also be a meditation room and alternative medicines available at the new center.
The current treatment facility sees around 15 cancer patients each day and in over 20 years of service, the facility has outgrown its needs.
Brooks discusses the impact the community has on the new state of the art project.
BROOKS: THE COMMUNITY HAS BEEN EXTREMEMLY INVOLVED. WHEATHER IT'S THROUGH OUR OUTREACH PROGRAMS. THROUGH OUR GROUPS BECAUSE WE CARRY GROUP THERAPY AND DO THOSE KINDS OF THINGS. THEY'VE JUST BEEN SUPER INVOLVED. AND NOW THROUGH THE SAN JUAN MEDICAL FOUNDATION AS WELL AS THE ROBERT W. UMBACH CANCER FOUNDATION, THEY'RE ACTUALLY FUNDING THE BUILDING ITSELF. AND THEN THE COMMUNITY THROUGH CITY BONDS IS HOW WE'RE GOING TO BUY THE EQUIPTMENT TO PUT IN IT.
The new cancer center is slated for completion in October of this year and treatments begin in November.
