9 People Die In Utah Bus Crash
(2008-01-07)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: A ninth person has died from a bus that crashed in Utah last night/ Sunday evening.
KSUT's Sarah Baumgartner reports.
SARAH: Another passenger has died in a chartered bus returning skiers from Telluride to Phoenix that crashed last night on Utah State Route 163 10 miles north of Mexican Hat. Among the 51 on board, nine are now reported dead.
It's estimated 20 others were injured.
According to Trooper Cameron Roden with Utah State Patrol, having the crash occur in a remote area hindered the rescue process.
CAMERON RODEN: WITH IT BEING IN A RURAL AREA YOU KNOW IT DOES EFFECT AS FAR AS RESPONSE TIME. WE DID ALSO CALL FOR A HELICOPTER OUT OF COLORADO, BUT DUE TO WEATHER THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO FLY. SO, YOU KNOW IT DOES IT EFFECT IT SOME.
Utah State Patrol says the Arrow Stage Line bus failed to negotiate a curve, left the highway and rolled over several times, splitting open the roof of the bus.
Investigators say the road was wet from light rain at the time of the crash.
An investigation is continuing. No names have been released as officials are notifying next of kin.

From KSUT, I'm Sarah Baumgartner.
