Nike Introduces Native 7 Shoe
(2007-12-20)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: Nike is launching their new line of Air Native N7 shoes made specifically to fit the Native American foot.

A local diabetes organization held an event to help distribute 100 shoes at the SunUte Community Center on Thursday.

KSUT's Sarah Baumgartner reports:

THEY'RE A LOT MORE COMFORTABLE, A LOT MORE WIDER, (NO CONSTRICTION), FEEL GOOD AND TIGHT.
SARAH: That was one of many curious attendants that tried on the Nike Air Native N7 shoe. The Shining Mountain Diabetes Program hosted the event where there was shoe fitting, foot massages and information on kidney education. Shining Mountain, which is on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation, dispersed the N7 to individuals that already participate in the program or ones that have just signed up for a six-month exercise contract.
The program also includes a free six-month membership to the SunUte Community Center and a specific work out regime for that individual.
Marvin Pinnecoose, a representative from Nike and a Southern Ute tribal member himself, describes why there is a need for a Native specific shoe.
PINNECOOSE: I THINK TWO OR THREE RESEARCHERS THAT VISITED I WANT TO SAY 20 TO 35 RESERVATIONS. JUST TRYING JUST TAKING A LOOK AT THIS ISSUE AND SEEING IF IT WAS TRUE OR NOT OR IF IT WAS A COINCIDENCE THAT THE FEET TEND TO BE BIGGER AND IT WS TRUE THAT WE HAD TO ACTUALLY HAD TO DESIGN A WIDER LAST FOR IT WHERE I THINK ON AVERAGE THE STANDARD SHOE IS ABOUT A C SIZE OR A B WIDTH. WE ACTUALLY WENT TO A DOUBLE D ON THESE BECAUE INDIANS, WE TEND TO HAVE FLATER FEET AND WIDER HEELS SO WE ACTUALLY ACCOMPLISHED THAT WITH THIS DESIGN.
The Shining Mountain Program promotes a healthy lifestyle to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes and its complications.
Mandi Dicamillo, Special Program coordinator for Shining Mountain says that she hopes this new shoe will help promote a more active life style to the 30-50 members already signed on and hopes to encourage more to do the same.
DICAMILLO: I'M HERE TO HELP PUT THEM ON A PROGRAM, AN EXERCISE PROGRAM, EITHER HERE AT SUNUTE OR AT HOME, JUST OUTSIDE WHATEVER THEY WANT TO DO, IT'S UP TO THEM I'LL HELP THEM.
If someone can't be there in person to help motivate, Pinnecoose says the N7 is technologically advanced.
PINNECOOSE: NIKE HAS A DEAL WITH APPLE WHERE THERE IS A SENSOR THAT GOES INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE SHOE AND IT'S FOR TRAINING PURPOSES. IT READS INTO A SENSOR THAT PLUGS INTO THE BOTTOM OF AN IPOD NANO AND IT SENDS THE INFORMATION BACK AND FORTH SO THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY COUNT YOUR TRAINING RUNS.
Training runs include calorie totals, distance and time.
The colors of the N7 range from pink, black, and white. Some may have a small arrow design trim around it. But each have a rainbow pattern on the laces and heel.
Pinnecoose says the rainbow symbolizes the path of the sun from sunrise to sunset. The rainbow is just one of many elements of design on the shoe.
PINNECOOSE: WE HAVE THE N7 WHICH IS EMBROIDERD ON EACH SHOE. AND WHAT THAT IS IS PAYING RESPECT TO 7 GENERATIONS WHERE YOU'RE IN THE MIDDLE GENERATION AND YOU ALWAYS LOOK BACK THREE GENERATIONS AND WHAT YOU'VE LEARNED. AND WHAT YOU CAN PASS ON THREE GENERATION AHEAD OF YOU. SO THAT'S WHERE WE GET THE TERM N7. NATIVE 7.
You're not going to find the N7 at your local shoe store. Pinnecoose says that those interested should seek their local Indian Health Services Program for information on the Native 7.
After trying on the shoe, one gentleman is ready to hit the gym.
Sarah: YOU FEEL LIKE YOU WANT TO GO FOR A RUN NOW?
GENTLEMAN: YEAH. TREADMILL. 2 MILES.
