(2007-11-17)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD:

SARAH: In a closed door executive session, the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners will be interviewing the final candidates for the County Managers position on Friday November 30th between 10:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

The board selected Peckham and McKenney to assist in the recruitment of a new County Manager following the resignation of former County Manager Michael Scannell. The Board selected 6 candidates as finalists for the position. They include:

Jamie Fontes, Associate/Development Consultant, Lawrence Klose, LLC, Green Valley, AZ
Edward Green, County Manager, Garfield County, Glenwood Springs, CO
Martin Moore, County Administrator, County of Otero, NM
Shawn Nau, Director, General Services Department, Maricopa County, Phoenix, AZ
John Schneiger, Former Community Development Director, City of Palm Coast, FL
Joanne Spina, Assistant County Manager and current Interim County Manager, La Plata County, Durango, CO

County Commissioner Joelle Riddle discusses three main characteristics of the ideal County Manager.

JOELLE RIDDLE: YOU KNOW I THINK AMUNGST THE BOARD, THE THREE OF US HAVE REALLY DECIDED THAT OF COURSE WE WANT TEAMWORK. WE WANT SOMEONE THAT CAN IMPLEMENT THE STRAGTEGIC PLAN OR KIND OF LEAD THAT CHARGE SO THAT IT MAKES IT A LIVING, BREATHING DOCUMENT THAT WE USE TO KIND OF AS A TOUCHTONE TO REFER BACK TO OUR BUDGETARY DECISIONS. AND YOU KNOW JUST OUR INITIATIVES THAT WE HEAD FORWARD WITH IN THE FUTURE. AND ALSO SOMEBODY THAT CAN RELATE TO I THINK THEY PROVIDE A UNIQUE POSITION OF WORKING FOR THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS SPECIFICALLY BUT THEN PROVIDING A LINK FROM THE BOARD TO THE STAFF AND THEN ALSO OFTEN TIMES A LINK TO THE PUBLIC. AND BEING ABLE TO REALLY RECOGNIZE AND RECEIVE IMPUT AND FEED BACK FROM THE PUBLIC AND INCORPORATE THAT INTO WHAT WE'RE DOING AT THE COUNTY. SO THAT WE HAVE A TRUE REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT AND THAT COUNTY MANAGER REALLY HAS A SOLID FOUNDATION OF WHAT THAT MEANS.

A public reception with all finalists is scheduled for Thursday, November 29, 2007 from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel, in Durango. Interested citizens are welcomed and encouraged to attend the reception to meet and greet the finalists.
