Input Sought On Possible Pagosa Rec Center
(2007-10-01)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: The first of what could be three meetings to decide the fate of a proposed Community Recreation Center in Pagosa Springs will be held this evening.
KSUT's Victor Locke reports.

VICTOR: Armed with a 2006 community survey showing a desire for more parks, trails and open space, as well as a community recreation center, Pagosa Springs parks officials are pushing forward to try and meet those desires.
At a public meeting tonight, input will be sought on possibly building a rec center.
Pagosa Recreation Supervisor Tom Carosello says they think they might be able to build a center of 45-thousand square feet or so, slightly larger than half the size of the Durango Rec Center.
And, he says they have a site for the center on South 5th street.
CAROSELLO: IT WOULD BE DUE EAST OF THE CURRENT HIGH SCHOOL FACILITIES, SOCCER FIELD AND BASEBALL FIELDS, AND SOUTH OF THE NEW SPORTS COMPLEX, OUTDOOR SPORTS COMPLEX, GOING IN, PROBABLY BE ON LINE NEXT YEAR, THAT PARK, A NEW SOFTBALL FIELD AND MULTIPURPOSE FIELD, SOCCER FIELD, ABOUT FIFTEEN ACRE SITE RIGHT ADJACENT TO THE RIVER THERE.
Carosello says they are looking at a one penny per dollar hike in sales taxes charged in Pagosa Springs.
That would raise enough to fund a 16 million dollar recreation center and still save about 250-thousand dollars per year over perhaps 25 years, for other parks, open space and trails projects.
Carosello says the plans are still in the very preliminary stages.
CAROSELLO: A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE UNDER THE PERCEPTION THAT THIS HAS BEEN DECIDED UPON AND WE'RE GOING TO A VOTE. THAT'S NOT THE CASE. AT THIS FIRST MEETING, IF FOR ANY REASON IT GOES SOUTH, THESE ARE SCOPING MEETINGS AND WE DON'T THINK IT'S FEASIBLE, WE'LL SHUT IT DOWN. IF IT'S POSITIVE WE'LL PROCEED TO THE SECOND MEETING, IF THAT ONE'S POSITIVE WE'LL PROCEED TO THE THIRD WITH THE HOPE OF GETTING A DECISION FROM COUNCIL ON WHETHER OR NOT TO PURSUE IT FOR NEXT YEAR'S APRIL BALLOT, AND WE'LL HAVE IT WRAPPED UP BY THE END OF THE YEAR, WHETHER OR NOT TO PUT IT TO THE VOTERS, SO NOTHING'S BEEN DECIDED YET.
The town's retained the architechtural firm of Barker Rinker and Seacat.
At the meeting tonight, representatives of BRS will present information on past centers they've designed including those in Cortez and Durango.
Those attending the meeting will be able to help design what they'd like to see in Pagosa's center to meet current and future demands.
Carosello says they hope if the sales tax hike and bond issue to finance the center make it to an April ballot and pass, the center could be under construction by next fall and open in the fall of 2009 or spring of 2010 at the latest.
The meeting on a possible Pagosa Rec Center is at 6:30 this evening, at the Community Center Gym.
