Durango Council Approves War Resolution
(2007-09-05)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: Durango City Council approved a resolution last night, calling for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and full funding for the needs of war veterans.
KSUT's Victor Locke reports.

VICTOR: What some called moving and emotional input came from about half the nearly 60 people crowding council chambers.
The majority spoke in favor of the resolution.
MONTAGE: YOUR BUSINESS IS ABOUT POTHOLES, ABOUT SIDEWALKS, NOT TELLING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES HOW TO RUN STATE AFFAIRS. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, LET US WITHDRAW. THERE IS NOTHING TO LOSE, TO WIN, AND EVERYTHING TO LOSE. I'M ASHAMED OF YOUR RESOLUTION AND MY SON'S GOT MORE BALLS THAN YOU IF YOU VOTE THIS THROUGH. THIS ILL BEGOTTEN STAR CROSSED CHAMBER OF HORRORS THAT'S BEEN UNLEASHED BY A PARANOID AND BULLYING ADMINISTRATION NEEDS TO COME TO AN END. IT IS NOT CITY COUNCIL'S PURVIEW TO TAKE THIS UP. WE ARE ALL BEING DAMAGED POLITICALLY, ECONOMICALLY, PERSONALLY, BY THE WAR IN IRAQ.
With Michael Rendon absent, council voted 3-1 to adopt the resolution.
After being told he could not, under council rules abstain, Mayor Doug Lyon cast the lone no vote saying the issue wasn't one council should consider.
The resolution now goes to President Bush as well as members of Colorado's congressional delegation.
From KSUT, I'm Victor Locke.
