Access To Popular Backcountry Area to Close
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: A popular backcountry hiking area north of Durango will be a bit less accessible over the next few weeks beginning Tuesday.
KSUT's Victor Locke reports.

VICTOR: Since it was built in the 1970's, the Needleton Bridge crossing the Animas River has allowed back country enthusiasts easy access from the train, into the Weminuche Wilderness Needle Creek Trail.
That will end for four to six weeks when the bridge is closed, starting this Tuesday.
An inspection in 2001 showed the bridge was sagging.
As a result, decayed and damaged timbers and cables will be replaced.
Those wanting to access the area, including the Chicago Basin, will have to ride the train to the Cascade Wye, where it will stop each day.
But the hike from there to the Needle Creek Trailhead will add about 7-miles to the trip accessing the wilderness.
Again, the Needleton Pedestrian Bridge over the Animas closes Tuesday, for four to six weeks for repairs.
From KSUT, I'm Victor Locke.
