Ground Broken On New Jail
(2007-08-28)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: Construction of a 40-thousand square foot addition to the La Plata County jail is underway.
KSUT's Victor Locke reports.

VICTOR: Wielding silver shovels, County Commission Chair Wally White, his fellow commissioners an other county officials broke ground on the 17-million dollar jail expansion Monday.
WHITE: IT'S GONNA BE A GREAT BENEFIT TO THE COMMUNITY. IT'S GOING TO IMPROVE SAFETY ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE COMMUNITY AND IN PARTICULAR FOR THE SHERIFF'S OFFICERS THAT WORK HERE.
The expansion, next to the existing jail on Turner Drive will include 84 new beds, a new booking area, offices and other facilities.
It's expected to be completed a year from December, not too soon for Sheriff Duke Shirard.
SHIRARD: WE HAD, THIS MORNING, 184 INMATES WHICH IS MORE THAN WE HAD AT ANY TIME LAST YEAR. LAST WEEK WE HAD 205. WE HAD RUN OUT OF COFFIN BEDS, WE HAD THEM SLEEPING ON MATTRESSES ON THE FLOOR. WE HAVE 254 OUT ON ALTERNATIVES TO INCARCERATION, IF WE DIDN'T HAVE THAT PROGRAM, WHERE WOULD WE BE HERE?
The 17-million expansion is being financed from county cash reserves, and won't require any hike in taxes.
From KSUT, I'm Victor Locke.
