Conference Center Tax Idea In Jeopardy
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: Plans for a proposed Conference Center in Durango may be derailed.
KSUT's Victor Locke reports.

VICTOR: The Durango Conference Center Business Improvement District has proposed the lodger's tax, paid by those staying at area hotels and motels, be increased 150-percent, from 2 percent to 5 percent.
Two thirds of the new money would go to fund construction of a conference center downtown and one third for marketing expenses.
The city council must approve ballot language for the lodger's tax increase by September 7th, if the issue is to appear on the November ballot.
Instead, City Staff will propose Tuesday that council deny the BIDs request for a ballot question.
Noting that the proposal for a tax hike was first presented June 30th and discussed by council July 24th, the city staff report to council says the proposed convention center needs a more balanced, well considered plan to bring it to fruition.
And it says a misstep with the ballot issue now could further delay progress toward a better solution.
Council will take up the issue when it meets tomorrow night.
From KSUT, I'm Victor Locke.
