NM Governor Expresses Concerns About Desert Rock
(2007-07-28)
(ksut) - New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson says current plans for a proposed coal-fired power plant in the Four Corners Southwest of Farmington, would be a step backward.
Richardson says the $3B Desert Rock Energy Project would harm air quality and scarce water resources and exacerbate existing environmental problems.
The proposed 15-hundred-megawatt power plant is a joint venture between Houston-based Sithe Global Power and the Navajo Nation's Dine Power Authority.
It would be built on Navajo land and is being touted as a major economic development project for the Navajo Nation which will bring hundreds of jobs and millions in tax revenue.
Developers also tout Desert Rock as one of the cleanest coal-burning plants in the country.
Critics argue it would harm the environment and residents' health.
A spokesman for the Desert Rock Energy Company says Desert Rock's technology is cleaner and more efficient than that of other plants.
