Man Shot Outside Colorado Governor's Office
(2007-07-16)
(ksut) - (AP-Denver, CO)- An unidentified man armed with a gun has been shot and killed outside the office of Colorado Governor (Bill) Ritter.

Ritter's spokesman, Evan Dreyer, says the governor was not injured.

Dreyer says the man walked into the office and said, ``I am the emperor and I'm here to take over state government.''

Dreyer says the man refused orders to drop his gun, and a member of Ritter's security detail opened fire.

The shooting occurred in a hallway outside the governor's first floor offices, which include a lobby and several other rooms. It's NOT immediately clear where Ritter was at the time.

Authorities roped off the area, and an ambulance and eight police cars converged on the building's north entrance.

The Capitol has NO metal detectors. The devices were installed shortly after the 2001 terrorist attacks but were removed within months.

They are usually put in place during the governor's annual State of the State address in January, but are then taken away again.
