Bear Fire at 1500+ Acres, 50% Contained
(2007-07-10)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: More than 100 firefighters are continuing their efforts to contain the Baer Fire, burning in Southeast La Plata County near County roads 110, 114 and 115.
KSUT's Victor Locke reports. TRT 1:32

VICTOR: The Bear fire is now estimated to have burned 15 hundred, 26 acres, as opposed to the estimated 1250 earlier Monday.
Public Lands Information Officer Eric La Price says the estimate comes from actual GPS readings taken in a flyover yesterday.
Fire managers say the fire did not grow any yesterday.
It is now estimated at 50-percent contained.
La Price says firefighters were successful on two key battlefronts Monday.
LA PRICE: WELL THE CREWS WERE BUSY BUILDING LINE ALL DAY AND WE HAD AIRCRAFT DROPPING RETARDENT. THEY'RE CONCENTRATING HEAVILY ON THE AREA WHERE BEAR CANYON IS LOCATED ON THE NORTHEAST END OF THE FIRE BECAUSE WE REALLY WANTED TO KEEP THE FIRE OUT OF THAT AREA, BECAUSE THAT'S A DENSE CONCENTRATION OF PINON JUNIPER THAT WE DIDN'T WANT THE FIRE GOING INTO. AND ALSO TWO MILES AWAY FROM THAT NORTHEAST END OF THE FIRE THERE ARE ABOUT 20 RESIDENCES, SO WE DEFINITELY WANTED TO PROTECT THAT AREA.
Air tankers and helicopters continue to assist personnel from 13 different agencies and departments.
9 Engines, 5 water tankers and several dozers are also busy on the blaze according to La Price.
LA PRICE: THE HIGH WINDS ALSO RETURNED BUT THEY ACTUALLY HELPED SUPPRESSION EFFORTS BY BLOWING THE FIRE BACK ON ITSELF.
La Price says there have been no injuries and no ordered evacuations.
It's also too early to say when the Bear Fire, which is believed to have been started Sunday by a lightning strike, might be considered contained.
