La Plata County Enacts Fire Restrictions
(2007-07-02)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: Fire restrictions are now in place for all of La Plata County, and most of Southwest Colorado, as moisture levels drop and temperatures rise.
The latest restrictions, in effect immediately, were adopted this afternoon/yesterday afternoon in La Plata County.
KSUT's Victor Locke reports.

VICTOR: The sign on Durango's Vectra Bank flashed temperatures in the mid to upper 90's Monday afternoon.
Across the street in the LaPlata county courthouse, the Commissioners wasted little time Monday afternoon in enacting Stage One fire restrictions for all of the county.
These are in addition to restrictions earlier imposed on most forest service lands in Southwest Colorado, as well as restrictions on the Southern Ute Reservation.
Butch Knowlton, Director of the La Plata County Office of Emergency management and other local officials told the commissioners moisture levels are approaching those of 2002, the year of the Missionary Ridge Fire, 7-8 percent locally, and as dry as 1-2 percent recorded at Mesa Verde.
KNOWLTON: WE'RE IN A POSITION NOW WHERE IN SOME PARTS OF THE COUNTY, IN PARTICULAR BELOW 85-HUNDRED FEED WE HAVE CRITICAL FUEL ISSUES WITH THE WILDFIRE POTENTIAL BEING VERY HIGH.
Like earlier restrictions, those adopted by La Plata County ban campfires other than in established campgrounds with fire rings, restrict smoking to inside vehicles or buildings, and place restrictions on such things as use of internal combustion engines and gas well flaring.
All use of fireworks by private individuals is also banned county wide.
The restrictions do not, however, ban community fireworks displays which can take place as scheduled Wednesday night.
With more hot dry weather expected, Knowl
ton says tougher stage two restrictions could come sooner, rather than later.
KNOWLTON: IF WE CONTINUE DOWN THIS ROAD, WHERE WE SEE CONTINUED DRYING, CONTINUED WINDS, CONTINUED LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY WE'RE PROBABLY GOING TO BE PUSHED INTO THAT IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS.
Stage 2 restrictions, among others things, forbid any open burning.
From KSUT, I'm Victor Locke.
