Fire Restrictions For San Juan Public Lands
(2007-06-27)
(ksut) - 06.27.07.FireRestrictions

HOST LEAD: Fire restrictions will take effect Monday on most of San Juan Public Lands in Southwest Colorado.
KSUT's Victor Locke reports.

VICTOR: High temperatures, low humidity and an abundance of dry cheatgrass and beetle killed trees are making for high fire danger.
As a result, most San Juan Public Lands will be under stage one restrictions as of Monday.
Pamella Wilson of the San Juan Public Lands Center says the affected area is bounded by the west and south state lines, on the east by highway 84 east of Pagosa Springs, and on the north by highway's 160 to Mancos, then Highway 184 to oMcPhee Reservoir, along the Dolores River, and then along the Dolores/San Miguel county line.
WILSON: THESE AREAS HAVE A LOT OF CHEATGRASS WHICH IS THE THIN GRASS THAT TURNS PURPLE THEN TURNS BROWN AND IS A HIGHLY FLAMMABLE FUEL. AND IF WE GET FIRE STARTS IN THESE AREAS A FIRE COULD JSUT TAKE OFF REAL QUICKLY.
Among other things, stage 1 restrictions require all campfires to be in fire rings in established campgrounds, and the use of spark arresters.
From KSUT, I'm Victor Locke.
