(2007-05-31)
(ksut) - 06.01.07.SalazarInDurango

HOST LEAD: Colorado Congressman John Salazar's calling for faster action to modernize the nation's wildfire air tanker fleet.
KSUT's Victor Locke has more.

VICTOR: The Democrat 3rd District Congressman's work in congress was recognized by several veteran's organizations at the Durango's VFW Hall.
Salazar's been involved in several key veterans issues, including working for a new Veterans Hospital and Cemetary in the state.
He's also joined with 2nd District Congressman Mark Udall in writing the Forest Service on the air tanker issue.
The two lawmakers aren't happy a long term plan for updating the air tanker fleet hasn't been delivered by this Spring as promised.
SALAZAR: THE FOREST SERVICE SEEMS TO THINK THAT THEY DO HAVE ADEQUATE POWER TO STOP WILDFIRES HOWEVER WE'RE CONCERNED ACROSS THE WEST AND YOU SEE THIS KIND OF WIND IS STARTING TO PICK UP, IN FACT MY WIFE AND I AS WE WERE DRIVING ACROSS THE WESTERN SLOPE, WE WERE COMMENTING ON HOW WE THINK THE DRY SEASON IS STARTING TO COME ON A LITTLE EARLY.
Salazar admits budget constraints are largely to blame for delays.
From KSUT, I'm Victor Locke.
