Allard Pushes for TV Coverage Hearing
(2007-05-31)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: There's a new twist in the lengthy battle to bring Denver Television programming to Southwest Colorado.
KSUT's Victor Locke reports.

VICTOR: It's appearing more and more that it will take an act of congress to switch primary television coverage for La Plata and Montezuma Counties.
Colorado Senior Senator Wayne Allard has asked the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transporatation to consider his Satellite and Cable Access Act of 2007.
Allard introduced the bill in January to switch the two counties from the Albuquerque Television Market, to Denver.
The bill, in part, is in response to a petition signed by more than 4-thousand Southwest Colorado residents.
Paulette Church of Durango was one of organizers of the petition drive.
CHURCH: IT VERY MUCH IS A DAVID VERSUS GOLIATH THING, AND TO BE HEARD AT ALL AT THAT LEVEL IS REMARKABLE FOR A SMALL COMMUNITY LIKE OURS. AND IT REALLY HAS LARGE IMPLICATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, SO I'M VERY GLAD TO SEE THAT BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE ARE PUTTING PRESSURE ON TO GET US THE NEWS THAT WE NEED AND INFORMATION WE NEED OUT OF OUR STATE CAPITOL.
Allard is also asking the committee to hold a field hearing, if that's what's needed to understand the issue.
CHURCH: THERE WAS A FIELD HEARING HELD EARLIER, I BELIEVE THAT WAS THROUGH REPRESENTATIVE SALAZAR, AND IT WAS REALLY DIFFICULT TO PUT IT TOGETHER. BUT IT REALLY BROUGHT THE MESSAGE HOME. I WOULD BE SURPRISED IF THEY WOULD COME DOWN AGAIN BUT IT DOES GIVE US A VOICE AND IT WAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO TALK WITH THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THE DECISIONS.
Three months ago, 3rd District Colorado Congressman John Salazar hosted an FCC official's visit to Durango to hear first hand about the television coverage issue.
She indicated at the time it would be difficult to make any changes, without action by congress.
The 26-thousand estimated TV viewers in La Plata and Montezuma Counties aren't entirely without Denver programming.
Though all network programming originates from Albuquerque stations, some Denver station newscasts are carried, at least on Durango Bresnan Cable.
