New County Human Services Building Delayed
(2007-05-23)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: La Plata County Commissioners have voted to put the brakes on a new Human Services Building.
KSUT's Victor Locke Reports:

JOANNE SPINA: THERE ARE A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT THINGS THAT ARE COMING INTO PLAY RIGHT NOW THAT MAKE OUR STAFF A LITTLE CONCERNED ABOUT BITING OFF ALL OF THIS AT ONE TIME.
Assistant County Manager Joanne Spina presented the case for, as she put it, a "strategic pause" in constructing the 9-million dollar building in Bodo Park, to free up space in the courthouse.
The delay will allow county staff to concentrate on the larger 17-million dollar jail expansion now getting underway and complete renovation of the armory building into a boys and girls club.
The county also wants to update forecasts for taxes from gas produced in La Plata County, which make up a large percentage of county income.
SPINA: THIS IS PERHAPS ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT RECOMMENDATIONS WE'VE MADE TO THE BOARD IN MANY MANY YEARS.
County Human Services Director Lezlie Mayer says delaying the building won't negatively impact delivery of human services, which expanded last year into the remodeled Riverbend Building behind the Rec Center.
MAYER: WE'RE OKAY, THE ISSUE IS UNTIL WE MOVE OUT, THE COUNTY CAN'T SPREAD OUT AND HAVE MORE SPACE.
A decision on the Human Services project is expected to be made early in 2008.
From KSUT, I'm Victor Locke.
