Congressman Wants Desert Rock Hearings
(2007-04-26)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: Colorado's Third District U.S. Congressman is calling for more public hearings into plans for a major new coal fired power plant in Northwest New Mexico.
KSUT'S Victor Locke Reports.

VICTOR: In a letter to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Democrat John Salazar asks for public hearings in La Plata and Montezuma County's on the draft environmental impact statement for the 15-hundred megawatt Desert Rock Power Plant.
Sithe Global and the Navajo Nation plan to build the 3 billion dollar plant on the reservation, Southwest of Farmington, at the mouth of a coal mine.
Salazar says there's growing concern about the environmental impact of Desert Rock and other coal fired power plants in Northwest New Mexico.
Sithe Global Spokesman Frank Maisano says they've planned all along to hold at least one hearing in Durango on the draft EIS.
MAISSANO: WE HAVE HAD NO RESERVATIONS ABOUT GOING UP THERE TO CONTINUE THIS PROCESS AND WE CERTAINLY WON'T HAVE ANY RESERVATIONS ABOUT GOING UP THERE AGAIN.
The draft EIS is expected to be released in May, with hearings to follow in the Four Corners, in June.
I'm Victor Locke, for KSUT.
