9R's Barter to Stay
KSUT's Victor Locke reports.
VICTOR: After meeting with Barter in executive session last evening, 9R school board members emerged to say they would allow Barter to complete her contract, which expires in June 2008.
Barter and the board members, in a joint statement, said they would work together over the next year, and strive to improve their outreach to the community.
The decision to retain Barter follows a week of turmoil in the school system, including allegations by resigned board president Mike Matheson that five members of the board had met illegally and voted to fire Barter.
Other members denied that charge.
Monday night, board members met behind closed doors with principals and administrators to talk about their goals.
Barter has been under fire from some in the community, and board members, who are at odds with some recent decisions and policies.
If Barter had been fired, it could have taken up to a year to find a successor.
During that time, the makeup of the school board could have changed significantly.
5 of the 7 school board seats are up for election this November.
I'm Victor Locke, for KSUT.
