School Superintendent Ouster Try Leads to Resignation
(2007-03-07)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: An apparent attempt by 5 Durango 9R school board members to oust superintendent Mary Barter has led to one member's resignation.
KSUT's Victor Locke has more.

VICTOR: In his letter of resignation delivered Wednesday, School Board President Mike Matheson says he's confirmed five members of the board met illegally in the past week.
Matheson says he's confirmed through member Jeff Schell, and others, the five voted to terminate Barter's contract immediately, and offer former Escalante principal Gene Giddings the job as interim superintendent.
Matheson wrote he cannot be part of a board that is engaged in illegal and unethical activity, and was resigning immediately.
A special school board meeting has been called for Monday evening.
It was just one week ago high school principal Greg Spradling resigned.
The board, Barter and the public have been at odds over other matters lately.
Among them, decisions not to renew a teachers contract to coach football and concerning early release on Fridays.
I'm Victor Locke, for KSUT.

TAG: Barter could not be reached for comment. Schell denied an illegal meeting occurred and declined further comment. In the interest of disclosure, Mike Matheson is a member of KSUT's board.
