LaPlata Commissioner Lieb Sets Resignation Date
(2007-02-01)
(ksut) - HOST LEAD: In an emotional and tearful announcement, La Plata County Commissioner Bob Lieb said Wednesday he will leave office, next week, month's sooner than expected.
KSUT's Victor Locke reports.

LIEB: MY RESIGNATION IS EFFECTIVE AS OF NINE O'CLOCK, MONDAY MORNING.
VICTOR: Republican 8 year La Plata County Commissioner Bob Lieb choked back tears throughout most of his 25-minute announcement during a business session of the commissioners.
Lieb says the reason he's resigning dates back to November 2003, when his first wife Mary, was gravely ill.
LIEB: AND I HAD A DISCUSSION ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT I SHOULD RUN FOR MY SEAT, BECAUSE IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT SHE WAS AT A STAGE IN HER ILLNESS THAT IF SHE SURVIVED SHE WOULD NEED CARE. SHE SAID "BOB, YOU RUN FOR OFFICE, YOU LOVE THAT JOB TOO MUCH." THOSE WORDS HAVE STUCK WITH ME AND THEY'VE HAUNTED ME FOR EVERY PART OF EVERY DECISION I'VE HAD TO MAKE SINCE THEM.
VICTOR: Mary Lieb died two months later. Lieb remarried last September, giving him what he calls a new lease on life with his new wife, Annie Carroll.
But he says he's continued to struggle, to stay focused and has been torn between his feelings and his duty to citizens.
He explained for those reasons, he planned to retire when his wife retires in July, prompting his preliminary resignation announcement of January 2nd.
Lieb says he pushed the date to next week so he could accept what he called, "an excellent business opportunity."
LIEB: I REALIZE TOTALLY, IT'S A SELFISH DECISION, IT'S ONE I HAD TO WEIGH MY OWN PERSONAL PREFERENCES AGAINST THOSE OF THE COUNTY. I STAND READY TO TAKE THE CRITICISM FOR THAT, BECAUSE IT'S TRUE.
He says he can't disclose more about that business opportunity at this time.
He went on to say:
LIEB: I'M PROUD OF THE COUNTY FOR ALL IT'S ACCOMPLISHED. IT'S PAST HAS BEEN GREAT AND IT'S FUTURE IS BRIGHT. THIS JOB HAS BEEN FUN AND CHALLENING, IT'S PROBABLY THE MOST CHALLENGING OF ANY COUNTY I CAN THINK OF, AND I MEAN THAT HONESTLY. I'M SORRY THAT I'VE GOTTEN A LITTLE EMOTIONAL OVER THIS. IT WAS EASY TO WRITE THIS OUT THIS MORNING, HASN'T BEEN EASY TO SAY, BUT THE WORDS COME FROM MY HEART AND I HOPE THE PEOPLE OF LAPLATA COUNTY UNDERSTAND THERE ARE NO MOTIVES IN MY ACTIONS, OTHER THAN WHAT I'VE EXPRESSED HERE TODAY.
Lieb thanks his fellow commissioners, Joelle Riddle and Wally White and county staff, then relinquished his chairman's gavel to Riddle.
RIDDLE: AS CHAIR, I'D LIKE MY FIRST OFFICIAL ACTION TO BE, TO THANK BOB LIEB. I'M SURE THAT AS, THE LONGER I'M HERE THE MORE I'LL REALIZE ALL OF HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR COMMUNITY.
White, and county manager Michael Scannell also reacted.
WHITE: WE VALUE, AND I'VE VALUED YOUR EXPERTISE, YOUR APPROACH TO MATTERS, I'VE LEARNED A GREAT DEAL OVER THIS LAST TWO YEARS.
SCANNELL: YOU HAD A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY BOB, TO SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY. FEW PEOPLE IN LAPLATA COUNTY GET AN OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE IN THE ROLL YOU SERVED AND YOU DID IT WITH FINESSE AND APLOMB, YOU DID IT WITH INTEGRITY, YOU DID IT WITH ALL OF THAT FOR COMING ON EIGHT YEARS. THAT'S A REMARKABLE CONTRIBUTION FOR YOU TO HAVE MADE.
LIEB: THANK YOU ALL, AND I WISH YOU GOD'S BLESSINGS.
Lieb says he'll remain in LaPlata County and looks forward to continued public service with the Regional Housing Authority, County Budget Advisory Committee and other groups.
The LaPlata Republican Central Committee's vacancy committee has ten days from Monday to name a successor.
At least four people have expressed an interest in being appointed to finish the final two years of Lieb's second elected term.
