Lava Beds Cave Ecology and Bat Watch
General Event Information
Event Category:
Classes/Workshops
Price:
$160 * contact the Presenting Organization listed below for ticketing information
Dates and Times:
July 11, 3:00PM-11:00PM; (This is a three-day class.)
It’s a sight very few ever get to witness. We’ll travel four miles on foot and arrive at a secret lava bed cave just in time to see thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats fly out at sunset. We will be the outflight’s only audience, watching adult female bats circle and head out over the sagebrush to hunt insects at Tulelake. Friday night we’ll hike back after dark, then enjoy some Saturday free time exploring other caves and sights of Lava Beds National Monument before reconvening for an afternoon session on bat biology and natural history. Saturday night we’ll observe some of the Monument’s 14 bat species as they come in to drink from cave pools - we might even capture some for an up-close encounter. Sunday we’ll explore cave ecology and Lava Beds lichens with presentations by Monument staff and volunteers.
