Fresh Gallery will bring back artwork by area animals from Dickerson Park Zoo and Rutlege Wilson Farm Park. This year, the keepers will bring a box turtle, snake, and a skink to do live paintings.
First Friday marks the beginning of exhibit which will be up all month. The live demonstrations will take place during First Friday Art Walk on August 1st from 6pm till 10pm. Second Saturday Art Walk will be another day of demonstrations from 11am till 6pm.
The keepers and animals enjoy painting together. It is enrichment for both of them. Painting is a form of animal training and enrichment that goes beyond masterpieces by lions, tigers, and many other species. It allows keepers to manage the animals in a positive way. They build personal relationships with the animals while using "painting" to train other behaviors. For example, an elephant footprint is great practice for elephant foot radiographs by using the canvas as a radiograph plate. They love adding new items to the animalís environment and painting is a fun way to do this. It is amazing when you see the animals start to think about where their next stroke is or what paw goes where!
Stop by during the month of August, 2014 from 11am till 6pm, Tuesday through Saturday. Fresh Gallery is located at 400 W Walnut St in downtown Springfield.
