Employment Rise means Enrollment Dip
(2007-08-22)
(ksje) - Classes began this week at schools throughout the Four Corners .
At San Juan College preliminary enrollment estimates for the fall semester show that enrollment will decline compared to similar numbers last year.
The College attributes the decline to strong working conditions in San Juan County as well as a decline in high school graduates.
According to data collected by the New Mexico Public Education Department, the number of high school graduates statewide declined 5 percent from 2000-01 to 2004-05.
The number of individual students on the first day of classes at San Juan College was 6,278, compared to 6,661 last fall, a 6 percent decrease.
Growth areas at the College are seen in the School of Energy, which holds classes that directly prepare individuals for the local energy industry; and in the School of Health Sciences, which also reflects demands in the job sector.
Areas experiencing enrollment declines are in traditional academic areas - humanities, math and science.
The College has initiated focused work to improve outcomes in college preparation/developmental courses, recruitment and retention, online programming and internal communication structures to address these declines.
