First News: Long-time Speaker of the New Mexico House Ben Lujan has died at age 77. (listen)

(KSFR) - The long-time speaker of the New Mexico House of Representatives has died of lung cancer. Democrat Ben Lujan was 77. Before the 2012 session of lawmakers began last January, Lujan announced he would not be running for office again. He said at the time his doctor advised him not to continue with his duties as speaker but Lujan went ahead and presided over virtually every session. He served in the legislature for nearly 40 years as the representative from Nambe and most recently was House Speaker. He was the father of Congressman Ben Ray Lujan.

Four Santa Feans have officially filed to run for the Santa Fe school board in the February elections. The New Mexican says Lt. Louis Carlos of the police department, retired educator Lorraine Price and teacher Edward Worden will run for the District 5 seat now held by Frank
Montano. Realtor Fred Zimbler and teacher Susan Duncan will run for the District 3 seat now held by Barbara Gudwin.

The New Mexico Public regulation Commission has voted 4-to-1 to keep the state's solar diversity target at 20 percent. Tuesday's decision was 17 months in the making and had heard from Attorney General Gary King and New Mexico Independent Energy Consumers advocating that the solar portion of the state's energy portfolio be reduced. The PRC also moved to have wind-source energy increase to 30% while reducing targets for biofuels, geothermal and biomass from 10 percent to 5 percent. The decision provides some certainty on policy as renewable energy concerns seek to grow their businesses in New Mexico.

Questions about the occupancy rate at the UNM Hospital in Albuquerque has Governor Martinez wanting more answers before she'll endorse plans for a 96-bed expansion. Today's Albuquerque Journal reports that the issue arose during a meeting Tuesday of the state Board of Finance on which Martinez is a voting member. UNM Hospital has maintained that its occupancy rate is 90%, far higher than the national average. But a Martinez spokesman says the numbers from the State Department of Health are in disagreement. UNM is hoping to build a $146 million adult care hospital to address overcrowding.

Marking the 4th anniversary of RailRunner commuter service in Santa Fe, Mayor David Coss hosts a ribbon-cutting ceremony later this morning at the historic Santa Fe depot in the Railyard. Hailing from 1909, the platform has just undergone extensive renovation. Today's11AM event also features the re-opening of the depot's Santa Fe Visitors Center.
