First News: SF County provides another $400K for indigent care at Christus St. Vincent. (listen)
(2012-10-25)
(KSFR) - Christus St. Vincent hospital has gotten another but smaller contribution from Santa Fe County. It amounts to just under $400,000 and is a supplement to a recent grant from the county of $2 million. In recent years, county commissioners allocated as much as $9 million a year. But the New Mexican reports that big contributions stopped after the federal government began requiring more information about how the hospital accounted use of the funds. This year's contributions from the county will allow Christus to leverage about $6 million in matching federal funds for indigent care.

Los Alamos National Lab researchers may have found a means of accelerating the clean-up of radiation at Japan's badly-damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant. That plant was crippled by a March 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami which triggered a meltdown of three reactors. Today's Albuquerque Journal reports that a specialized team from LANL has been able to place detectors near two of the reactors. That allows for detection of nuclear materials without putting workers in dangerous proximity. A LANL spokesman says Japanese officials have not yet decided whether to apply the method to their overall cleanup effort.
