First News: New polling shows democrat Martin Heinrich with a 9-point lead over republican Heather Wilson in the US Senate race.

(KSFR) - The latest Albuquerque Journal poll shows President Obama with a 10-point lead over Republican Mitt Romney among likely New Mexico voters. The previous poll showed Obama with a lead of just five points.

The same poll shows Martin Heinrich with a 9-point lead over Republican Heather Wilson in the race for a seat in the U.S. Senate. Heinrich is favored by 48 percent of those surveyed. Wilson gets 39 percent. Heinrich's numbers are especially strong in Santa Fe and the rest of the north central region where he pulls 62 percent. He gets more than 50 percent in the Albuquerque area. The poll says Heinrich is also helped by increased support from likely voters who identify themselves as independent.

No indication yet whether sky diver Felix Baumgartner plans another free-fall jump from the edge of space. But his dive over southern New Mexico on Sunday can be called a great success by any measure. He jumped from an altitude of more than 24 miles for a new high-altitude record.

Over the next seven days, the New Mexico Department of Public Safety's "Operation Safe Driver" will be underway. The program will have law enforcement on the watch for seat belt use and instances of distracted driving. Commercial drivers will also be subject to roadside inspections.

A report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas says New Mexico's heavy dependence on government jobs is slowing down the state's recovery. Nearly 24 percent of all jobs in New Mexico are in the public sector, with four percent in federal jobs. Nearly half of all the jobs lost in the state during the past year were from government offices. The report says the government drag on New Mexico's economy is the most severe in New Mexico among the mountain states.

The recall of peanut butter and other nut products linked to an outbreak of salmonella from a New Mexico food company has now been expanded to include raw and roasted peanuts. Sunland Inc. of Portales has already recalled peanut butter brands sold at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Walmart, Kroeger, Target and Costco. Illnesses have been reported in 19 states.

The 41st annual International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque concluded Sunday with picture perfect weather for a final mass ascension. Some 550 hot-air balloons from 19 countries participated in the nine-day event which started with some cancellations due to high winds. In the duration & distance contest knows as the America's Challenge, the American team of Cheri White and Mark Sullivan were declared winners after their hydrogen balloon traveled more than 1600 miles to North Carolina.

Weather for Santa Fe -- A sunny and dry week in store with daytime highs around 70 degrees and overnight lows in the low 40s. A midweek cooldown will drop highs into the low 60s by Thursday with lows in the upper 30s.
