Gas balloons headed East (Listen)
(2012-10-08)
(KSFR) -
7 a.m. -- The annual America's Challenge gas balloon race from the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta is underway. KSFR's Joe Gallegos is there and says one of three U.S. teams is leading the pack of five entries over west Texas, following last night's launch. Together with three balloons from the U.S, balloons from Great Britain and Russia are also in the race. The number of teams competing in the long distance race is down this year because of the higher cost and availability of helium.

New Mexico will see another event in the skies tomorrow. Daredevil skydiver Felix Baumgartner is expected to make his free-fall jump from the edges of space tomorrow over the southern part of the state. He'll be jumping from 23 miles up for a new world record. If he makes it, he could be the first human to break the sound barrier.

The elections are just a month and a day from now. In the race for the U.S. Senate seat from New Mexico, Democrat Martin Heinrich continues to show a wide lead over Republican Heather Wilson in the polls. But Wilson is raising more money than Heinrich and more outside money has been spent promoting her campaign. The New Mexican reports that outside groups supporting Wilson have spent more than twice as much on her as other groups have spent on Heinrich. Combined, the two candidates have attracted nearly a million in advertising from so-called independent organizations.

CenturyLink telephones will continue to operate -- at least for a while. The company and the union failed to reach agreement on a new contract by the midnight Saturday deadline. But the union says it has agreed to continue working during an extension of the negotiations. The company has some 400 workers in New Mexico and 13,000 nationwide. Union representative Al Kogler told KSFR News the union wants to avoid losing some of their existing benefits.

Weather: Sunny skies with highs in the low 70s all this week. Nighttime lows should be warming up after today. There's a chance of a thunderstorm by Friday.
