(KSFR) - Unofficial primary election results show that political newcomer Carl Trujillo has won the race for the state legislative seat in District 46. He beat out fellow Democrat Santa Fe Mayor David Coss by some 200 votes. The mayor offered concession remarks to KSFR **** The contest had been heated with Trujillo refusing to debate Coss publicly and with Coss complaining that Trujillo had the backing of Republicans. Trujillo faces no opposition in the November general elections and will take the seat held by Ben Lujan of Nambe.

County Clerk Valerie Espinoza will wear a different hat next January. She won the race for Public Regulation Commissioner from this area. Espinoza edged out her nearest opponent, Virginia Vigil, by a five percent margin. Espinoza will get the PRC post because there are no Republicans running against her in November.

State Sen. Phil Griego faced two opponents but will retain his seat in the legislature.

Former City Council member Miguel Chavez has won his bid for a seat on the county commission. Chavez won by a handy margin over two fellow Democratic rivals.

Congressman Martin Heinrich beat out State Auditor Hector Balderas for the chance to win the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senator. The margin was just one percent. Heinrich is a Democrat who will face Republican Heather Wilson in November. The winner will succeed Democrat Jeff Bingaman who is retiring after five terms.

The Bear Springs Fire burning in the Jemez which ignited Sunday after a lightning strike has now consumed some 400 acres. Containment is pegged at 10%. 190 firefighting personnel are on scene and have been working to remove forest fuels near some cabins in Bear Springs threatened by the blaze. Smoke from the fire was visible Tuesday in communities both north and south of the blaze 6 miles southeast of Jemez Springs.
Down in the Gila region, the growth of the Whitewater Baldy Complex Fire has slowed. Containment has increased to 22% as the state's largest wildfire ever has burned 260,000 acres since first erupting in mid-May.

The state Transportation Department advises Santa Fe area motorists of lane closures beginning today on NM599 near its intersection with County Road 62. New roundabouts and a bridge are being built as safety improvements as the area has suffered a number of accidents, some with fatalities. Drivers can expect delays between 7AM and 5:30PM all weekdays with reduced speed limits in effect.

Weather for Santa Fe - sunny and dry weather is in store into next week. Highs today in the mid 80s will slowly cool to the upper 70s by Sunday. Overnight lows throughout the period in the mid 50s.
