First News: Kirtland Air Force Base's underground oil spill larger than thought. (listen)
(KSFR) - An oil plume sitting beneath Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque may be larger than previously thought -- as much as three times larger. The Albuquerque Journal is reporting that new estimates put it at 24 million gallons. The oil has spread from a leak in an underground pipe and reportedly has been growing for decades. The Air Force has been working to extract the contaminants using above-ground devices similar to vacuum cleaners. Albuquerque water officials say they have two major water well fields less than two miles away.

The authorities believe a fire in a Tucumcari veterinary clinic may have been a case of arson. They say only a few of the 50 to 80 animals in the clinic at the time of Monday's early morning blaze survived. The Tucumcari facility is the only vet clinic in Quay County. This week's fire is the 3rd in a string of suspicious fires going back to mid-April and local authorities are seeking the public's help with any information they may have on the incidents.

Firefighters in the Gila National Forest are worried that high winds forecast for today could dramatically spread a fire that as of yesterday had burned about 1,000 acres. They are asking seasonal residents and campers to consider voluntary evacuation. Red Flag warnings have already been posted.

The residential real estate market around New Mexico appears to be a little brighter. The state Realtors Association says home sales statewide rose nearly 9 percent in April compared with the same period last year. The statewide median price stands at $165,000, about the same as last year.

September now seems the most likely time-frame for release on parole for Carlos Fierro. He's the former Santa Fe attorney sentenced to a seven-year prison term on vehicular homicide charges after killing a pedestrian downtown back in November 2008. Eligibility for parole first arrived in April but Fierro lost some of his "good time"-served credits for improperly making contact with media outlets about his case. Fierro has asked to be paroled to California.

An El Dorado 6th-grader remains in an Albuquerque hospital after nearly drowning in the area's community pool on Monday during a student field trip. Details of just what happened are not yet known as an investigation continues. The unidentified young girl was among scores of students spending the day at the pool and authorities say the facility was well-staffed with lifeguards.
