Santa Fe auto accidents: 1 dead, 1 injured (Listen)

A Santa Fe man is dead after crashing his car into a wall in a police pursuit over the weekend. He's been identified as 21-year-old Juan Pablo Martinez. The authorities say he was fleeing police who were trying to stop him for speeding.

The county sheriff's department says Northbound NM 599 is open following a single car asccident Sunday. They say the man driving the vehicle lost control and rolled over several times. He was taken to Christus St. Vincent for treatment.

This week is a big one for the 2012 political primary season. The supreme court meets tomorrow to decide whether nearly a dozen candidates for office failed to properly identify the offices they are running for on their signature-petition forms. Caught up in that question State Rep. Lucky Varela from Santa Fe who is running for reelection and County Commissioner Virginia Vigil who is running for the Public Regulation Commission.

The contest for the District 3 PRC seat is getting a lot of attention because the winner will replace Jerome Block, Jr. who faces prison time for misusing state funds. The Democratic Party holds a PRC candidates forum Wednesday night in Eldorado. The Sierra Club and the League of Women Voters will host a PRC forum in Santa Fe Thursday night.

The Santa Fe County Democratic Party is calling for one of the two candidates for county treasurer to pull out of the race. Oliver Garcia has been charged with trying to use fake car-wash certificates at a Cerrillos Road car wash. He's currently the deputy county treasurer.

Some New Mexico homeowners stand to get part of a nationwide financial settlement with five of the country's biggest mortgage lenders. The total settlement equals $25 billion. The banks involved include Bank of America and Wells Fargo among others. The banks have been ordered to put new mortgage-servicing practices in place, including stopping robo-signing of foreclosure paperwork.

Governor Susana Martinez will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the fall of Bataan at an observance in Santa Fe this morning. The 10 a.m. event will be held at the Bataan Memorial Building on Galisteo Street.
