Christus workers level charges at hospital (Listen)
(2011-07-26)
(KSFR) -
Supporters of union workers at Christus St. Vincent Hospital allege that hospital managers have threatened unionized workers with being fired if they go on strike. Former labor lawyer Carol Oppenheimer of Santa Fe told the Santa Fe County Commissioners that it's a violation of federal labor laws to threathen workers. She asked the commission to take a vote of confidence on the hospital because it uses tax payer funds for indigent care.

The union has filed a notice that it could go on strike within a week because negotiations with Christus have broken down.

County commissioners called for the hospital to be more transparent about its use of taxpayer funds, saying that hospital management has avoided defining how money for indigent care is actually used. Commissioner Virginia Vigil said the hospital's actions reflect the attitudes of "corporate America."
