New Mexico communities seeing coyotes come to town (Listen again)
(2011-06-06)
(KSFR) -
Ecosystems can go out of whack. Some ecologists will tell you the way to fix it is with a top-down approach, starting with restoring large carnivores.

That's the philosophy behind an Albuquerque-based nonprofit group named the Rewilding Institute. They look for ways to reintroduce wolves and other large mammals, including coyotes, to wilderness areas.

Wildlife biologist David Parsons is a fellow with the institute and found an audience eager to hear about coyotes when he gave a lecture at REI. Surprisingky, he learned that not only had most of the audience seen coyotes in the wild, many had seen them right in town. I asked him why that's happening.
