A new $12 million Trades and Advanced Technology Center opens today on the Santa Fe Community College campus.

(KSFR) - Santa Fe Community College holds a grand opening of its new $12 million facility today at 2PM. It's called the Trades and Advanced Technology Center and the state-of-the art building combines classroom teaching with modern technology. Designed for energy efficient operation and for teaching students how to use environmentally-friendly building methods, the building has rooftop water collectors, rainwater catchment, and solar, among other features.

Neighbors of Albuquerque's Kirtland Air Force Base are raising more questions about the military's effort to clean up the contamination resulting from a giant oil leak on the base over many years. Estimates are that it could be as much as 8 million gallons of oil that seeped into the ground, making it about the size of the Exxon Valdez tanker spill. William Moats with New Mexico's Environmental Department tells KSFR it poses a threat to the aquifer and will take a while to clean up. ***

The congressman from Northern New Mexico is questioning why his Republican colleagues are pushing legislation to increase domestic oil drilling without considering whether it would help lower gas prices for Americans. Congressman Ben Ray Lujan offered an amendment to the oil-production bill. It would require that domestic production stay inside the U.S. as a way of increasing supply and forcing gas prices lower. ***clip*** Lujan's amendment failed on a mostly party line vote.

A Santa Fe Schools bus driver faces multiple charges after a 13-year-old student captured cellphone video showing the man inappropriately touching her and another young girl. 54 year old Martin D. Gonzales was taken into custody Thursday and has been placed on administrative leave. The video shows the man squeezing the thighs of two young teens on the school bus route servicing Amy Biehl Community School and Capshaw Middle School. Law enforcement reports that during an interview, Gonzales also admitted to touching an 8-year-old girl. He's facing two counts of battery and one count of criminal sexual contact.

Tomorrow is national train Day and the event is being marked at Albuquerque's Alvarado Transportation Center. Amtrak started the event in recognition of the 1869 completion of the first transcontinental railroad. Activities tomorrow include tours of the Rail Runner Express commuter trains along with locomotives and rail cars from Amtrak and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway. Events get underway at 1PM.

Weather for Santa Fe - dry and sunny skies today and for the weekend with highs in the upper 70s. Overnight lows in the low 40s.
