A run on iodine tablets in the U.S., especially in New Mexico, wouldn't help reduce the threat of radiocative iodine from the damaged nuclear reactors in Japan.

Dr. Michael Landen of the state Health Department tells KSFR there's no evidence of any immediate threat to New Mexicans. What's more, he says taking iodine too early would not afford any longer-term immunization either.

We ask him how radioactive iodine gets into the body and how iodine is sometimes, but not always, effective in combating it.
