Schmitt promoting resources protection and jobs (Listen again)
(2011-01-07)
(KSFR) -
The head of the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department expresses doubts about state regulations protecting resources and about climate change.

Jack Schmitt is a former astronaut (the only one never to have served in the military), a former U.S. senator from New Mexico and a Ph.D. geologist. Nominated by Gov. Susana Martinez to head the state's EMNR Dept., Schmitt says there's plenty of leeway to protect the state's abundant resources while also using them to create jobs. Both he and the governor say they believe a thorough review of all environmental rules should be reviewed, including the "pit" rule designed to keep oil and gas drilling-sludge from seeping into the ground.

Environmentalists say there's a less diplomatic side to Jack Schmitt, who has taken a climate-change denial position in interviews such as one on Fox Business News a year ago.
