Sierra Club challenges PNM rate request (Listen again)
(2010-12-28)
(KSFR) -
The local chapter of the Sierra Club says PNM's reaction to an order from the EPA to clean up its San Juan power plant has resulted in several mistakes. If the Sierra Club is right and PNM is wrong, the electric company will be asking state regulators for a much smaller rate increase than has been announced so far - not an extra $90 a year afterall, but something more like $10 a year for the average residential customer.

David Van Winkle is chairman of the Sierra Club's energy Committee and says both he and the EPA have taken a look at PNM's rate-hike announcement for the power plant and found errors. Van Winkle says they're in three categories - the fact that PNM is a partial, not a total, owner of San Juan. Also the makeup of residential and business customers requires a different look at how rates should be structured. And finally he says the cost of equipment to be installed to meet EPA guidelines was overstated. PNM has not responded to KSFR's call for comment.
