Election Day is four weeks away and today is the last chance for New Mexicans to register to vote. It's also the first day of early voting. Voters can go to the county clerk's office, request an absentee ballot, and vote on the spot. Early in-person voting at other polling locations will start Oct. 16 and run through Oct. 30. The last time New Mexico elected a governor was in 2006. Absentee and early voting that year accounted for about 40 percent of all the ballots cast in the election.

In political news, there are reports that all three of New Mexico's congressmen have gotten endorsements from the National Rifle Association. Ben Ray Lujan, Martin Heinrich and Harry Teague each got top grades from the NRA, reportedly for voting to allow guns in national parks.

It could cost a million dollars to take care of all the problems at Santa Fe's Chavez Community Center. The Journal North reports that the city's finance committee is studying a list of needs to the center as part of the process to divide nearly $1.5 million among several high-priority projects. Among other projects are matching federal funds for the Santa Fe airport. The Chavez Center has been plagued by moisture problems, roof leaks, and what staff is calling a hazardous chemical room.

Meanwhile, the city has spent another three-quarters of a million on the purchase of a Cerrillos Road building to make it a full-time homeless shelter. Another quarter-million dollars could be allocated for renovations. The full city council now must approve a resolution to lease the building to an inter-faith group to run the operation. The New Mexican says they will call the project the Santa Fe One-Stop Homeless Coalition.
