N.M. preps for Hurricane Gustav assistance
The New Mexico Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) is en route to Marshall, Texas, where they will work at a field medical station.
The New Mexico National Guard is on stand by. State Police are coordinating with local government agencies to ensure security and law enforcement needs are adequate for the influx of evacuees. A team of twenty state police officers are ready to go to the area if needed.
The NM Department of Health is working to fill an Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) request to send up to three Type II Ambulance Strike Teams. Each Strike Team consists of 5 ambulances, staffed with 1 basic EMT, 1 EMT paramedic, and 1 team leader.
While the state is prepared to accept evacuees, the governor says initial reports indicate that no one will be sent prior to the storm's landfall. State homeland security is coordinating with the American Red Cross and local emergency management officials on shelter locations and logistics.
