Former US Attorney for New Mexico testifies
(2007-03-06)
(KSFR) -
9:30 a.m. -- The former US Attorney in New Mexico says he felt a phone call by Sen. Pete Domenici before the November elections could have led to creation of attack ads to be used by Congresswoman Heather Wilson against her Democratic opponent Patricia Madrid. David Iglesias says Domenici was asking about a corruption case being studied by a federal grand jury. Iglesias says he didn't want to reveal information that could lead to information one political party could use against another. Iglesias and other US attorneys are testifying today before a Senate panel investigating why they all were suddenly fired.

Iglesias also says Heather Wilson called him later to ask about sealed indictments in a federal prosecution. Iglesias says he refused to discuss the indictments.

-- 9:00 a.m. -- The former US Attorney in New Mexico is telling a congressional committee details of a phone conversation he had with Republican Sen. Pete Domenici last October. David Iglesias says he felt pressured by the call and, in his words, he felt leaned on to pursue a criminal investigation that could have embarrassed Democrats. Iglesias says he had never gotten such a call before. He is telling Senators he also got a call later from Republican Rep. Heather Wilson. Iglesias says Wilson asked about sealed indictments in his investigation into that matter. The former US attorney says sealed indictments cannot be discussed with anyone, including a member of Congress.
