Bowing to public pressure, Santa Fe city hall has released a draft audit report of the city's police department. News media, the police union and citizens had asked for the report but had been turned down until now. Mayor Coss ordered it released, saying city government wants to be transparent. The New Mexican reports the audit covers administrative issues with how the police department's budget is handled. Otherwise, the report appears to have no big news.
New Mexico school districts will be getting a little more money -- about two percent more -- next year under the state's new funding formula. The education secretary-designate says it will be the first increase in three years.
Santa Fe police have apprehended Leandro Anaya, the alleged driver in a hit and run case last month that resulted in the death of 50-year-old pedestrian William Schroeder. Before his arrest Wednesday, Anaya led police officers on a brief chase after they tried to pull him over. He eventually abandoned his vehicle believed to have been stolen by him the day before and fled on foot in the Rufina Street area. He was found hiding in a shed. He's been jailed on multiple charges, including felonies related to the February 15th hit-and-run.
Santa Fe's school board will hold a special meeting today at 5PM at Nava Elementary School as they discuss the search for a new superintendent. Back in late February, the board narrowly voted to terminate Bobbie Gutierrez who had been superintendent since 2008 and whose current contract was to have been in effect through June of 2013.
New Mexico First, the public policy organization fostering citizen involvement with governance, holds a special centennial edition of a statewide town hall today in Albuquerque. The 2-day event will focus on a 14-point platform of recommendations for lawmakers and communities regarding education, the economy, healthcare, and energy. Participants include teachers, high school students, businesspeople, farmers, elected officials, healthcare professionals, and others. Governor Martinez will deliver the town hall's keynote address at the Albuquerque Marriott and video messages will be delivered from Senators Udall and Bingaman.
Weather for Santa Fe - sunny, dry and warm today and through the weekend. Highs today in the mid 60s rise to the lower 70s by Sunday. Overnight lows tonight near freezing but moderating to the low 40s later in the period.

President Obama has left New Mexico after spending a little more than 10 minutes speaking to a group in the southern New Mexico oil patch. He's on a whirlwind trip to dispel talk that he is responsible for high gas prices.
