Some get amnesty, balance face arrest
If the Santa Fe Magistrate Court's threat is followed up on, more than 1,000 errant Santa Feans could be picked up by state police. That's the number that did not show up at a special "amnesty" court this weekend to satisfy their outstanding citations and clear their cases off the list of those with arrest warrants posted.
The court had a list of 1,600 drivers with outstanding traffic citations. The special court promised to get rid of the arrest warrants against them if they appeared Saturday morning and took care of the past-due fines.
The Journal Santa Fe reports that only 120 people appeared by the time the courtroom opened. They paid their fines, or worked out payment options with the judges.
State police have agreed to conduct sweeps for the remaining scofflaws. They could wind up in jail. © Copyright 2012, KSFR
