First News: 2 of 4 candidates for PRC unsure of revamp. (listen)
The operators of Dixon's Apple Orchard near Cochiti Lake are giving up the ghost. They're shutting down following fire and weather events last year that destroyed the apple crop. First was a severe spring freeze. That was followed by the Las Conchos fire that burned buildings and trees. The fire destroyed surrounding forest land, leading to flooding.
New Mexico's ACLU is suing the city of Roswell because police officers there repeatedly arrested two street preachers. The ACLU says the men's freedom-of-speech rights had been violated. The two men were arrested five times over a period of two years for speaking publicly on city property about their beliefs.
Santa Fe Police report that one of their mobile speed enforcement vans was damaged after an unknown vandal fired three shots into it while it sat along Bishop's Lodge Road sometime Tuesday or Wednesday. The windshield and a seat suffered damage but the cameras and equipment used to generate automatic citations were unharmed. If caught, the parties responsible will face felony charges of criminal damage. The city has 2 mobile speed vans which have been attacked in the past with paint balls.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico conducted commencement ceremonies Thursday for its 1,000th graduating class. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano was among federal representatives delivering remarks to 45 students who completed their 58-day training program and will now by deployed along the Mexican border in Arizona and Texas. To date, the Academy has graduated nearly 41,000 students.
An actor from the Albuquerque-based hit television series "Breaking Bad" has made some critical comments about crime in the Duke City after suffering burglaries of both his home and his car. Aaron Paul posted Tweets saying Los Angeles is a safer place and he can't wait to get back there. "Breaking Bad" is currently filming its final season at Albuquerque Studios. The actor has since deleted the comments from his Twitter page.
Weather for Santa Fe - mostly sunny today with a high near 60 degrees. Lows tonight near 40 with clouds on the increase as a storm begins to cross the state. Partly sunny Saturday and windy with highs only in the low 50s and a 20% chance for precipitation. A 30% chance for rain turning to snow in the overnight hours with lows in the upper 20s.

Two of the four candidates for the Public Regulation Commission in District 3 say they're unsure about a plan to revamp the organization. The other two say they are in favor of it. Candidates Brad Gallegos and Daniel Maki told an audience at last night's candidates forum the legislature was not clear enough about how the PRC would be revamped if a voters approved a constitutional amendment in November. But candidates Valerie Espinoza and Virginia Vigil said they approve of moving some functions out from under the PRC and setting up minimum qualifications for commission members.
