First News: SF County Commissioner Vigil's run for the PRC is being challenged. (listen)
(2012-04-03)
(KSFR) - Snow in the overnight hours has prompted some school delays in our part of the state. The UNM Taos campus along with Taos Municipal Schools have a late start along with schools in Pecos and Albuquerque's East Mountain district.

County Commissioner Virginia Vigil is facing an early hurdle in her race for the Public Regulation Commission. A Rio Arriba man alleges that Vigil submitted more than 150 petitions for her candidacy without identifying which district she was running in. He has gone to court to have her disqualified. Vigil is one of four candidates running for the District 3 PRC seat formerly held by Jerome Block, Jr.

National Forest officials say they believe a campfire that either escaped or was left unattended started one of last year's big wildfires in the Santa Fe area. The Pacheco fire burned more than 10,000 acres. That fire was located just north of Tesuque.

At least one Albuquerque city council member is in favor of a federal investigation into a rash of shootings by Duke City police. Councilor Ray Garduno is calling for the council to get the Department of Justice involved in an investigation. This comes as protestors at last night's council meeting demanded answers to the question of the high rate of police shootings in Albuquerque and the reason the police union gave each of the officers hundreds of dollars after the shootings to find ways to decompress.

American Eagle Airlines, a subsidiary of financially-challenged American Airlines, is adding an extra flight from the Santa Fe Municipal Airport to Dallas/Fort Worth beginning June 14th. That will bring to four the number of daily runs between here and Texas with one flight each day between Santa Fe and Los Angeles. The extra flight from Dallas/Fort Worth is being added a month earlier than in past years and is seasonal, ending in late August. Santa Fe Municipal Airport Manager Jim Montman says the extra month will be convenient for June travelers during high tourist season.

Santa Fe ranks in 10th place as Travel and Leisure Magazine has compiled a list of the nation's 20 "greenest" cities. According to readers' rankings of cleanliness, public parks, friendliness and transit, Portland, Oregon topped the list. The City Different ranked first with readers, however, for its cultural vibe, boutiques, and peace and quiet. The magazine notes that our new LEED-certified convention center was built, in large part, using recycled materials from the old building. Voters also applauded Santa Feans for being both---quote--" quirky & diverse.".

The New Mexico Department of Health is advising families to avoid potential exposure to salmonella by not purchasing small turtles or giving them to children for pets. The Health Department has been working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention over the last several months on a multistate outbreak related to exposure with small turtles. Of the sixty-six patients from sixteen states, 3 are from New Mexico-- 2 children less than 5 years old and one adult. On a related note, the Health Department last week cautioned parents against giving baby chick and ducklings as Easter presents as they, too, are often a vector for salmonella infection.

Weather for Santa Fe - still a good chance for precipitation throughout much of the daytime hours. Snowshowers will mix with rain as highs approach the low 40s. Lows tonight in the low 30s under cloudy skies. Sunny skies return tomorrow with highs near 60 and back to the 70 degree mark by Thursday.
