(krcl) - The Sixth Amendment guarantees every person accused of a crime the right to an attorney for his or her defense, regardless of ability to pay, and the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees all citizens equal rights regardless of race or national origin. Yet all too often, these rights are violated by indigent defense systems that leave low-income people, including many people of color, without adequate representation. Tamrika welcomes Graham Boyd and Marina Lowe from the ACLU to discuss the real life story of Regina Kelley, who is reflected in the character of "Dee Roberts" in the film, "American Violet." She was caught up in a massive drug sweep in the tiny town of Hearne, Texas ("Melody" in the film), along with dozens of other innocent people. Graham Boyd was her real life attorney. © Copyright 2012, krcl
