Seattle Student Assignment Plan Released
District enrollment director Tracy Libros says the boundaries will bring some predictability. "Students will start out with an assignment, and then if they wish to request a different school, they could go through the open enrollment process." Libros says the district's "option" schools will not have attendance boundaries. Instead they'll have referential geographic zones.
The new assignment plan allows a child to stay in their current school, no matter where they live. But their younger siblings, who are just starting out, might be assigned to a different school, perhaps one closer to home. Libros says siblings will have "top priority" for placement under a streamlined system of tiebreakers.
The district also released new enrollment projections. Libros says student numbers are rising quickly enough to turn on the lights at some closed schools. "We'll need to open some buildings to align capacity to meet the needs of current and projected students," she says.
According to preliminary information embargoed by the district until late Tuesday afternoon, most of the schools identified to re-open are elementaries in the city's north end, including Sand Point, old John Hay and McDonald in 2010. Viewlands would re-open in 201l, along with Rainier View Elementary in the city's Rainier Beach neighborhood. Funds to reopen those facilities are expected to be included in next year's school levy.
Community meetings are scheduled over the next month. A final school board vote is planned for November 18th. Gary Davis, KPLU News, Seattle.

SEATTLE, WA
(KPLU) -
The Seattle School District has unveiled its plan to move kids into their neighborhood schools. The idea behind the new plan is simplify a complicated enrollment process. It starts phasing-in next year, beginning with kids in Kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades. They'll be assigned to schools in their so-called attendance area. null
