(KPLU) - A research group at the University of Washington will get as much as 100 million dollars to team with the federal government to study a range of environmental issues. The UW's Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean was chosen to continue working with federal scientists on climate change, fisheries and more. Thomas Ackerman - who heads the institute - says identifying pollution in Puget Sound is another important part of the project.

Thomas Ackerman: "It looks pretty clean when you look at it with your eyeball, but if you go out and look at the water and talk to people who do that, you'll find there is a lot of pollution in Puget Sound."

Researchers at the university will coordinate their work with scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Seattle. Ackerman says the collaboration will lead to better understanding of environmental problems in the Northwest.
