Historic Schooner, Seattle's Town Hall Win Preservation Grants
SEATTLE, WA
(KPLU) -
A friendly competition aimed at raising awareness of local historic preservation projects turned into a furious contest to land big money. In the end, a century-old sailing ship and a popular Seattle gathering spot came out on top.
The schooner Adventuress, owned and operated by the Port Townsend nonprofit Sound Experience, and Seattle's Town Hall will each receive $125,000 in grants from the National Trust For Historic Preservation. The agency had planned on naming only one winner to get the top prize. But on the final day of an online public vote, the tally had gone back and forth so often, two winners were chosen.
Sound Experience executive director Catherine Collins says the competition was indeed friendly, and built to a feverish pitch over the 30 days of an online, public vote. "It was a nail biter. People were out working really hard for their team," said Collins. Adventuress is a well known sight on the waters of Puget Sound, and has been a working classroom for generations of students. The grant will be used to refurbish the boat's stern. "The stern, being exposed to a lot of fresh water, generally needs replacing a little bit more than other areas of the ship," she said, adding the work will include the boat's counter stern, or transom, the back-end of the ship.
Seattle's Town Hall was awarded the same prize. The community and cultural center on First Hill is housed in a former Christian Science church. Built in 1916, the repair list is mounting, including fixes to an enormous stained glass window, according to Wier Harman, Town Hall's director.
"We've known it was damaged, and we only recently learned the severity of the damage. The preservation specialists were telling us that we needed to replace it within the year or we were likely to lose the window entirely," said Harman.
The National Trust partnered with American Express on the contest, called "Partners in Preservation." The Seattle-Puget Sound competition is the latest in the series aimed at raising public awareness of historic preservation needs within communities. Harman says the contest is particularly poignant in Seattle.
"Historic preservation doesn't come naturally or easily to this region. We take for granted the ways in which our built environment holds the key to the feeling of community," he added. Harmon says the competition's popularity shows it met the goal of raising that awareness.
The top two beat out 23 other local entries (see list below). They'll share another $750,000 in smaller grants that will be awarded next month. Gary Davis, KPLU News, Seattle.
