Boise Skier Ready To Unleash "The Hurricane"
VANCOUVER, BC
(N3) -
A 20-year-old alpine skier from Bend, Oregon made his Olympic debut Tuesday. Tommy Ford came in 26th place in the giant slalom at Whistler. Meanwhile, freestyle aerials skier Jeret "Speedy" Peterson of Boise is psyching up to win a spot on the medals podium with a signature jump called "The Hurricane." Peterson made it through the qualifying round at the Winter Olympics Monday night. KPLU's Tom Banse has more on his death-defying move.

"Speedy" Peterson is saving his best for last. The three-time Olympian from Boise qualified for Thursday's aerials final at Cypress Mountain with a less complicated jump. The upcoming Hurricane packs three flips inside of five twists. Peterson says the name comes from the fact that when he's in it, it feels like a hurricane.
Speedy Peterson: "I plan on doing it as long as the conditions are like this. If they get the landing hill a little bit better, I think we'll be seeing it."
Ironically, he won't throw the Hurricane unless the winds are totally calm. Even he won't know for sure whether he'll do the trick until game time, Thursday night.
Speedy Peterson: "We'll see if the wind is right, see if it's raining, what it's doing. At this place, you never know."
The Bogus Basin ski team product needs to unleash something spectacular because he's up against tough competition from China, Belarus and the home team from Canada. I'm Tom Banse reporting. © Copyright 2012, N3
