Foreclosure Intervention Workshop
(2009-10-16)
(KPLU) - Tacoma and Pierce County are two of the state's hardest hit areas for foreclosures. The city is hosting a resource fair tomorrow (Sat, 10-17-09) to help prevent people from losing their homes.

The East Side, Hilltop and Central Tacoma have the city's highest concentrations of foreclosures - and people on the verge of them. That means opportunity for investors, who can scoop up homes at bargain prices and rent them out for profit. As many as 1500 foreclosed properties may soon come on the market. But that's bad for neighborhoods, says realtor Shannon Krueger. She's been selling homes in the area for more than 25 years.

"You could just drive down any street in Tacoma and you can pretty much tell if there's a high percentage of home ownership," she says. "There's that pride of ownership that you don't particularly see as much of when a home is filled with rentals."

Krueger volunteered to help organize the Foreclosure Intervention Workshop. It's an all-day event at Tacoma-Goodwill. Representatives of 4 big banks will be there to talk with frustrated loan holders about work outs. Credit counselors and attorneys will help people understand their options - including how to go bankrupt and still keep your home.

The workshop will be held Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the new Tacoma Goodwill located at 714 S. 27th St.
